What if the child doesn't answer?

The prompt, Please can I talk to a partner? inside a yellow speech bubble

Teachers often ask me what’s the best thing to do if a child doesn’t respond when their lolly stick is picked (random selection). Here are some options:

  • wait longer

  • point to the relevant Talk Prompts

  • rephrase the question

  • ask them what they are thinking

  • ask them which bit they are stuck on

  • let them choose somebody else to talk

  • let them pick another lolly stick

  • give them time to talk with a partner

Let’s make sure every child participates in dialogue for learning, and has a positive experience.
