I carry out whole school staff development to create a culture of high quality talk – I have developed a research, reflection, action approach which is both supportive and challenging to staff. In many schools, I recommend less teacher talk, and more pupil talk. To achieve this, I advocate

  • decreasing reliance on hands up. I work with teachers and support staff to help them to develop confidence in an array of easy to implement alternative techniques. This results in children who will take risks, children who are used to justifying their ideas with evidence, and children who feel genuinely listened to.

  • the implementation of whole school initiatives which bring lasting change, such as a whole school pupil talk agreement, a whole school teacher talk pledge, and whole school talk prompts.
