Once Upon a Picture resource

A colleague recently shared this fantastic site with me. If you haven’t already, I recommend you check it out. The curator, Sam, has gathered hundreds of brilliant images – beautiful, intriguing, moving, spooky – that will get people talking and thinking together. I wholeheartedly agree about the benefits of using pictures in learning; without fail, they inspire children to wonder and ask questions.

One way I like to use pictures to stimulate thinking is to place one in the centre of a blank sheet of paper. Then I ask children to write down all the questions and ‘wonderings’ that they have. This can be done individually, or in pairs or groups. Others can then give their responses. From this, an interesting dialogue will often develop.
