Frederick

Front cover of Frederick by Leo Lionni

This is another of my favourite books for P4C. It’s a lovely story about some field mice who are all collecting food for winter - all except Frederick, who is more interested in observing details of nature to nourish his poetic imagination. I’ve read this book to many groups of children from age 3 up and they are always interested in whether Frederick should have joined in with the other mice, or whether it’s okay to not help, or whether entertaining others at difficult times is helping. Here are questions some seven year-olds from Salford came up with:

A child’s written questions: Why did Frederick just lie down? Why did Frederick just do poetry at the end?
A child’s written question: Should everyone help?
