Talking Point – Rights of living things

Here’s a resource you can use or adapt to get children thinking about ethical questions around animals.

There are several ways you could use it:

  1. Ask for each statement Is it okay to…. e.g. race on a horse?

  2. Ask students to sort the statements into two groups: acceptable and not acceptable.

  3. Ask students to rank the statements from least acceptable to most acceptable.

Ask them to explain their reasoning and then invite others to support or challenge their viewpoint.

Opportunities to talk about difficult questions such as these can allow all pupils to get involved in the dialogue, to express their thoughts and not worry about getting the ‘correct answer’.
