Some young friends recently came to visit with their little two-year-old son (let’s call him Nico).
Nico, age 2, chatting to my mum, age 92, at Emley Show
I was SO impressed with his oracy skills!
He chatted constantly – about his toys and animals and aeroplanes in the sky. And asked lots of questions: What are you doing? Qué es esto? (What’s this? – he’s also bilingual.)
But he did other things too:
At one point he saw me sitting at the bottom of the stairs putting on my socks. He watched for a moment then asked: Quieres ayuda? (Do you need some help?)
He was sitting at the table playing. I opened the fridge and something fell out which I managed to catch. He looked concerned and asked me if I was ok: Estás bien?
Wow.
This is social & emotional oracy that his parents have modelled.
Including some holiday-themed questions… Is ice cream for breakfast really a good idea?!
This resource brings together phrases and tips to help parents and carers develop dialogue with their children at home.
Starting with simple/fun questions in Early Years helps children develop the skills to consider deeper ('more philosophical') questions over time.
A great way to start the day in Early Years - developing early language and reasoning as well as engaging families in their child’s learning.
