"Oracy has made me confident"

Here are some quotes from pupils aged 9 to 11 after their school began to prioritise oracy. Further to yesterday’s media coverage, these quotes provide an additional reminder of why we must teach children the life skills of talk, listening, thinking and dialogue:

  • Oracy has made me confident, because I never wanted to participate in discussions before but now I am confident to do so.

  • I am now a much better listener. I know that looking at the speaker and making them feel comfortable is important. I also like how my friends have learnt how to give kind and helpful feedback.

  • Oracy is important because you can learn how to convince teachers, friends and parents.

  • I love when we get to debate, and our teacher doesn't have to get involved because we can now respectfully agree or disagree!
