Concept activity – Things to read
Here’s a concept resource you can use to explore different types of writing, from notes to books to encyclopedias, and everything in between.
You could use it in various ways to develop critical thinking about texts, as well as vocabulary and understanding. Here are some ideas for talk partner activities using this resource:
sort into things we’ve heard of and things we haven’t heard of
sort into things I have read and things I haven’t read yet
sort into usually long and usually short
choose ten, and order from least to greatest number of words
rank ten (picked at random) in order of most to least useful
order from most to least interesting
Remember that providing the vocabulary on cut-up pieces of paper can increase the impact of these activities.
